Two windows snapped side by side in split screen, one blue and one amber, above a keyboard

Windows Tip: Snap Windows into Split Screen with Win + Arrow Keys

If you keep flipping back and forth between two windows — a web page on one side and your notes or email on the other — stop switching. Snap them side by side and see both at once.

Snap a window in seconds

  1. Click the window you want to move, so it is the active window.
  2. Press Windows key + Left arrow to snap it to the left half of the screen, or Windows key + Right arrow to snap it to the right half.
  3. That is it — the window now fills exactly half the screen.

Fill the other half

  1. After you snap the first window, Windows shows your other open windows on the empty side.
  2. Click the one you want, and it fills the other half automatically.
  3. To undo it, press Windows key + Up arrow to make a window full screen again, or just drag it away from the edge.

Two handy extras

  • Use the corners: snap a window, then press Windows key + Up arrow or Windows key + Down arrow again to shrink it into a quarter of the screen. That way you can fit up to four windows on one screen.
  • Drag instead: you can do the same thing with the mouse — drag a window to the left or right edge of the screen until you see the outline, then let go.

One shortcut, and you stop hunting through windows to compare two things side by side.
